There were originally eight of these living in the United States, two of which retired. Possibly the most well-known of those who haven't retired is Anita Blake, but there are also Larry Kirkland, John Burke, and Theodore Forester.
Recently, vampire executioners were granted the status of Federal Marshals, enabling them to work across the country instead of needing a license for each state in which they practiced. The lack of oversight and their cowboy ways prompted the marshal service to codify and regulate the teaching, tools, and operating procedures. So much so now that there always two operational Marshals per state.
